About the Artist – Ned Matilpi

Born in 1957 in Alert Bay, Ned Matilpi is a member of the Ma'amtagila First Nation, also carrying Tlingit ancestry.

He began carving at age 25, drawing on inspiration from his late father, Oscar Matilpi, and carving mentors like Doug Cranmer, Beau Dick, Bruce Alfred, and others.

He is celebrated for his work in carved masks, panels, poles, and bentwood boxes — all infused with the essence of Northwest Coast artistic traditions.
