Raven was mythic being as well as a familiar habitant of forest and shore. In his supernatural character he was quick, curious, greedy, and mischevious. Various stories of episodes in his life recount how he benefited mankind by discovering fire, the rising and ebbing of the tides, and the alternations of day and night. He is identified by his massive, long, and sharply tapered beak, which may be an extension affixed to a totem pole, or may be depicted folded down along the front of his body. He is often painted black. As a lineage crest, Kesu, the raven was commonly worn as a frontlet above the brow of the wearer.
