Mussels are considered a symbol of abundance and prosperity. Their harvest and consumption have often been associated with wealth and social status, particularly in ceremonial contexts such as potlatches. The ability to provide plentiful seafood, including mussels, demonstrates a family or clan's ability to host and contribute to communal feasts.

Shellfish, including mussels, have also been believed to hold connections to ancestral spirits and supernatural beings in Kwakwaka'wakw cosmology. Stories and legends often include references to sea creatures and shellfish, portraying them as intermediaries between humans and the spirit world. Mussels are seen as part of the creation of the world and have roles in the origin stories of the Kwakwaka'wakw.

These 2 small sculptures were masterfully carved by Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw artist Don Alfred, and would be a wonderful addition to any collection.
